Documentary Guided Reflection
1) What specific scene go to you? Describe and explain how it moved you.
The scene that got to me the most throughout Dinosaur 13 was at the very beginning when the research team actually found Sue, the T-Rex fossil. I found it amazing that Susan Hendrickson just happened to stumble upon a T-Rex skeleton when she got lost out at the site. I was fascinated by all the work the research team had to put in to remove the fossil from the hillside. I think it is incredible that the largest T-Rex fossil ever found was a complete accident that took 17 days to remove.
2) What surprised you? Why do you think it caught you off guard?
I was surprised that one of the Black Hills Institute research team members was originally facing a possible prison sentence that would be longer than the sentence given to a specific serial killer. This caught me off guard because while the charges were dropped, it doesn't make sense that a serial killer who took human lives would face a smaller sentence than a paleontologist who discovered a fossil in a bad location.
3) What questions remain after the viewing? What feelings stay with you after the film?
I do not understand how a battle over ownership of a T-Rex fossil could last 10 years. I am curious if there could have been a more peaceful, quicker way to solve the problem before it got so out of control. I was definitely shocked to learn about how serious the legal battle actually was. Ever since I was a little kid, I have always loved going to the Field Museum and seeing Sue. It will be hard not to think about how the museum ended up with Sue next time I visit.
4) Why might we avoid including research in our summaries? What could go wrong?
The overall point of the documentary may not apply as strongly if we research the topic outside of what we saw in the film.
